Drug Detox
An opiate addiction is one of the hardest drug addiction problems to address and solve. The very nature of the substance is what makes an opiate addiction such a difficult habit to break. The effects of opiates like oxycontin and percocet on the body is so highly chemical – it triggers the body’s reward system -- and this is where the difficulties lie.
The only way to really address the problem of an opiate addiction is to undergo a drug detox program. The aim of this program is to flush out the toxins that have been left inside the body by the opiates. These toxins have accumulated in the body because of the abuse of oxycontin or percocet.
In fact, an opiate detox is the first crucial step towards the road to recovery and removal of the dependence on these drugs. By detoxifying the body from these harmful toxins, the issue of withdrawal can be more easily handled by the patient. For example, if a person does not undergo a detoxification, he will experience stronger withdrawal symptoms and the severity of these symptoms may be too uncomfortable that a relapse into taking drugs becomes a big likelihood. A detoxification eases that transition from a drugged state to a drug-free state.
There are various ways of undergoing an opiate detox for either an oxycontin addiction or percocet addiction. There are certain drug detox centers that employ certain substances or methods in order for the patient to avoid suffering from physical withdrawal from the drugs. In an ideal situation (most commonly seen in highly successful centers especially in the San Diego area) the treatment would also incorporate counseling sessions during the detox phase as a way of also addressing the psychological aspects of the addiction. By also tackling this aspect of a patient’s well being the hope is that after the whole drug detox (or oxycontin detox) is finished the patient will have a lesser likelihood to relapse because he has also addressed the mental and psychological reasons for using drugs as a crutch.
When it comes to the drug detox phase of treatment for drug or opiate addiction, there are a number of treatment methods or philosophies that are used. Some of the more established methods would entail that the patient stay inside the drug detox center for the whole duration of the treatment. The downside with this method though is that it is difficult, if not possible, for him to hide his treatment or condition from the people he knows (whether at work or with his family).
A method that is growing in popularity among patients is the out patient method. In this particular treatment regimen, the patient undergoes his opiate detox from the comfort of his own home. All he needs to do is to coordinate with the drug detox center, visit the center for an assessment and he is given a prescription for drugs that will ease the process of detoxification and ultimately dependence on any kind of drug. This new method does not disrupt the life of the patient and requires no kind of hospitalization. Because of this, more and more drug dependents are opting for this kind of treatment method.
